Yellow Book A Project by He Xiangyu cover design with Stoodio Santiago da Silva
Berlin, 2019
He Xiangyu’s practice examines goods and products as symbols of mass production and consumption, reflecting on contemporary Chinese society. The Lemon Project, initiated in 2016, adopts the language of scientific research to create an encyclopedic exploration of the many meanings and functions of lemons and the color yellow.

The cover design is built around Kibami, a typeface developed specifically for the book. Kibami a term meaning ‘yellow tint’ or the act of turning yellow, often with age, creates an optical illusion: a precise mix of blue and black stripes on the cover tricks the eye into perceiving a yellow tone. This effect directly reflects the book’s focus on perception, color, and the passage of time.

The custom letterforms created for the cover later evolved into a complete typeface, developed by Marguerite Leroux. The project was developed by Stoodio Santiago da Silva.
