rInfected lexicon of language website design and wearables
Tallinn and Mexico City, 2023-ongoing
The infected lexicon of language is an ever-growing web archive of words and terms Carlo Canún created to propose a new vocabulary which responds to his experience of growing up in a world dominated by the heteronormative, the binary and the religious. The infected lexicon of language explores language as a virus that has the power to remember, record and actualize. For this reason, the words are published and circulated through wearables that work as walking-billboards, aiming for such terms to enter legitimate usage.
The design draws directly from the origin of the wearables themselves: second-hand shirts selected through availability and prior existence. This logic of found material informs the visual system as a whole.
The website adopts a deliberately simple structure, operating as an archive that houses both words and garments. In the words section, patterned backgrounds and color combinations echo those of the found shirts, visually linking language and clothing as parallel carriers of meaning.
