Mexico City, 2025–ongoing
Maricoteca is a self-managed archive dedicated to the material culture of sexually diverse lives in Mexico and Latin America. The project is inspired by the ‘Gay-Toteca,’ the personal library of Yunuen Maya and Antonio Montaño, who assembled a remarkable literary collection in Mexico City throughout the 1980s and 1990s. ‘La Mary,’ in turn, originates from the personal homoerotic archive of curator César González-Aguirre. Today, the archive is collectively developed by designer and artist Carlo Canún, photographer José Miguel Ramírez, and researcher César González-Aguirre.
The visual identity for Maricoteca is centered on a handwritten logotype, in which each letter carries exaggerated, queer gestures. Rather than relying on a rigid graphic system, the rest of the identity is shaped through material and creative direction. drawing from both existing archival materials and new elements produced specifically for the archive.
