Anticipation: Collector is a box of scent-based experiences that includes two silver capsules, a long vial, two ampules, pieces of driftwood, and a stone designed to hold scent.
The visual identity for Anticipation draws inspiration from instruction manuals for machine-made objects from the 1930s to the 1950s. The printed materials function as a guide, helping users to understand how to interact with the project’s unique and bizarre objects. Rooted in scientific research, the project operates almost as a form of contemporary alchemy, blending experimentation with sensory experience.
The graphic design is intentionally restrained, allowing the objects themselves to take center stage while maintaining the clarity and structure expected of a manual. Typography is used not only for reading, but also as a spatial system, acting as grid, divider, and organizer. Loose letter spacing and generous use of white space echo the volatility and ephemerality of scent. The graphics also play with transparency and ambiguity, offering subtle hints about the origins of each scent without fully revealing them.
The project was conceptualized and developed by Kärt Ojavee, Juss Heinsalu, and Heron Vrubel.
